In our pursuit of healthcare clarity and mitigating risks, we often face promising yet misleading information. Today, we'd like to explore a recurring theme, which we've named "Smoke and Mirrors.” Affluent families are not immune to this risk.
Our client, facing the daunting task of selecting a nursing home for her ailing mother, shared her concerns with us. She expressed doubts about the level of care her mother would receive, despite being told that the facility had a "doctor on staff."
To illustrate this, we'd like to draw your attention to two contrasting experiences:
- The Minimal Involvement Approach: One nursing home claimed a "doctor on staff" who visited for just 15 minutes every other week, mainly for paperwork, brief conversations with the nurse manager, and a coffee break before leaving.
- The Engaged Care Approach: Conversely, at another facility, the "doctor on staff" played an active role in patient care. This dedicated physician met daily with the medical team, conducted thorough patient exams, engaged with families, reviewed records, and made informed referrals.
Additionally, we also came across a situation where a facility advertised having "counselors on staff" for substance abuse rehabilitation programs. However, upon closer inspection, these counselors lacked formal training in mental health and substance abuse.
